About the boat

GOWER EXPLORER, a custom-made 10 metre RIB (Rigid Inflatable Boat), is powered by two 250hp hydraulically operated engines. It boasts state-of-the-art electronics and the latest in safety equipment. We even have Radar and family friendly seating.

Certificated by the MCA (Maritime & Coastguard Agency) to carry up to 12 passengers, we can go up to 20 miles offshore from a safe haven.

YOUR BOATMASTER

Boatmaster Jim Phillips was born on Gower. At the age of 10, Jim was the only boy in his school that could read nautical charts. He learnt this skill from his father, a Master Mariner. Six generations of Jim’s family were Master Mariners.

Jim’s ancestors were born and grew up on Gower, and the family history can be traced back to the 17th Century. The family has strong maritime links with Gower, North Devon and Cornwall.

Jim is a well-known local maritime historian and has over 35 years of knowledge of the local seas. Jim has provided articles and photographs for newspapers, magazines, books, and the Internet. He has given talks about the maritime history of Gower and Pembrokeshire and he has worked regularly with radio and television.
